The Z: She's got issues. Is the Z still worth it?
Issues I've heard about and/or had.
Date | Issue | Status |
---|---|---|
2022-08-29 | Resolved | |
2022-10-05 | Stop Sale on Manual transmission 2023 Z | Resolved |
2023-01-28 | Stop Sale on the Z -- for Paint and Headlamps (as of Jan 18) | Resolved with "headlight shock" (spongy tape). |
2023-05-10 | Reverse camera screen turning black | Unknown |
2023-05-16 | Dec '22 Proto hood paint damage | Unknown |
2023-05-21 | Inconsistent Katana Alignment | Unknown |
I suspect my car had the 6MT issue and that it was remedied in Japan. I haven't had any issues with the 6MT.
My car must be susceptible to the headlight paint flake issue because it has the small spongy bumpers installed. This seems to be working okay so far.
My car has the Katana alignment issue, and I'll ask about this next time the car is in the shop. This seems cosmetic, but it just looks bad and makes the car seem low quality.
While I was shopping for a car, I considered the Supra, the M2/M240i, the M4/M440i, the F-Type, the Porsche 718, and the Tesla Model 3. I really wanted a manual, and liked the styling of the Z, so I ended up here. I knew about some of these issues before I bought, and other issues came to light after ownership.
I'm not going to argue that it's acceptable for the Z to have these issues. It's not. As expensive as this car is, it should be more well-designed and assembled.
I hesitated to write this thread, worrying that it would come off as either a "Z-bashing thread" or a "clueless fanboy" thread. I put this out there to inform. Draw your own conclusion.
My conclusion: In spite of these issues, I still love this car. It looks great, and it's a joy to drive. I'm hoping to keep and enjoy this car for years to come (assuming I can stop running over helmets).

I was at Zdayz yesterday and the Z1 performance white shop car had the spot of missing paint behind the hood too. I think this one is gonna be really widespread the more time passes and the more time you open your hood

Yeah, I'm watching for it. It's one of the reasons I like this forum, learn and share with your Z cohorts.

Thanks for this info. I’m still in the market and haven’t seen any real deal breaker, yet. Looks like the typical “growing pains” of a new version. I just hope Nissan will crank-up the production to a reasonable level.

Ha! Indeed. Let’s pick-up the pace, Nissan. It’s not as if this is the first car you’ve ever made. And where are all the true red Z’s? I’d have better luck finding a unicorn.

My only issue is I've been waiting 479 days so far for my order.

Discovered a new issue this morning (and I am at 5,000 miles as of today!)..
The very very front bottom corner of my driver-side-door glass is chipped. How? I have no idea - it's not even exposed glass, it's behind the mirror 'rubber' housing even, so no way a rock or something hit it. Only noticed because the sun caught the glass just right and I could see the glass edging. To note, it's such a small corner edge that when you open the door - that part of the glass is covered by they window dropping.
I've also been having a 'rattling' in my driver door when playing music, doesn't even need to be turned up super loud (Starboy by The Weeknd is my best example so far of causing it basically the entire song), so now I'm wondering if it's a glass chip in the door..
The katanas not being perfectly aligned also bugs me - I should've bugged them to look at 'em when I was at the dealer last weekend.
Haven't had any of the other paint issues yet tho - but I haven't been opening my hood a lot, lol
