Take yourself on an island vacation – no worries, no responsibilities, just a fruity drink that is too cold to pick up sitting on the table, begging you to sip it.
My rum punch recipe conjures up these images and gives you an excuse to turn off your notifications, ignore your emails, and just breathe.
I love making a good mixed drink. Today, I’m showing you how to make a classic rum punch!
It’s a fairly basic drink, but the flavors have a somewhat magical power that instantly transports you to a tropical island where the sun is shining, the water is crystal clear, and the drinks are flowing.
Missing the waves of the beach this week, I think a little sunshine in a glass would be most welcome.

Ingredients
As you can imagine, there are many different rum punch recipes. However, I found that most rum punches include:
- Pineapple Juice – It’s easiest to just use some canned pineapple juice, but you can also juice a pineapple for a really fresh flavor.
- Orange Juice – Use pulp-free orange juice that is low in added sugar.
- Grenadine – This syrup gives it the marbled, sunset look with a sweet and tart taste.
- Rum – Use both dark rum and coconut rum. I feel the addition of coconut rum really gives it that tropical beachy flavor!
Beyond the flavor, one of my favorite things about this co*cktail is the happiness-inducing color!
How to Make
The ombre effect comes from the grenadine that sinks to the bottom and a little bit of dark rum that floats on the top. Isn’t it beautiful?
Let’s mix one up!
You don’t even need any shakers or fancy equipment. Just pour the pineapple and orange juice into your glass. Then, add both types of rum and stir it all together.
Slowly pour a splash of grenadine and let it sink to the bottom. Add a little bit of dark rum to the top. Garnish with a slice of lime!
Frequently Asked Questions
Before we get to the printable recipe card, here are some questions people often ask about rum punch. If you don’t see your question in this list, please leave it in the comments.
Can you make rum punch ahead of time?
Yes, this is a fantastic drink to make for a party! All you have to do is make more of it at once – about 2 quarts. Then, store it in the refrigerator until party time. It will stay fresh in the fridge for about 3 days.
What is the best type of rum for rum punch?
Malibu Original is my favorite type of rum to use in mixed drinks. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum has an island flair that you will love too.
What type of glass do you use to serve rum?
Rum is usually served in either a brandy snifter or a glass that is shaped like a tulip. But, for this rum punch, I just used a long skinny glass.
Is rum punch high in sugar?
Yes, since I used both pineapple and orange juice, this rum punch is high in sugar. It’s worth every single calorie, though!
Although this rum punch looks gorgeous, I like to give it a little stir to get everything all mixed up before sipping the day way. This punch is perfect for parties or to celebrate special occasions.
