I’ve been wanting to make homemade playdough for awhile now and I finally did it!! I was surprised at how easy it was to make… Even for me! 🙂
What you’ll need:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tarter
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1/4 cup salt
- food coloring
Mix all of the ingredients (except food coloring) in a medium-sized saucepan. Stir over medium heat until smooth.
Stir continuously until the dough balls (about 1-2 minutes). Remove from heat.
Once it’s cooled. Kneed dough together into a ball.
Add food coloring. Use as little or as much as you’d like.
It’s a good idea to wear gloves or mix it in a bag so you don’t get any food coloring on you.
Once it’s mixed, the color will not transfer onto your hands.
Then have FUN!! Store the playdough in small containers or baggies.
Daddy got in on the playdough fun too!
This is an extremely easy and fun activity for kids. Some children may be able to help kneed or even stir!
*I used the playdough recipe from Skip to my Lou who got the recipe from Homemade by Jill.

I love making homemade play dough. I think I enjoy it as much (more?) than the kids do!!

I made it once before and it just didn’t turn out right, but we didn’t have cream of tartar either.
and I can get 5 play doh packs at the store for like $1.60 or something so it’s pretty cheap here.
But great tutorial and I love the colors.Reply
My 7 year old loves doing this with the neon green coloring.

Great tutorial and pictures! I’ve been hesitant to make any at home because I was worried it wouldn’t turn out right, but I think I’ll give yours a try – it looks perfect. 🙂

Why not add the food colour before mixing it on the stove? Thats how I’ve always done it, and it eliminates the need for gloves or kneading…
RE: heather m’s comment- it’s not really about the cost, it’s just more fun to make your own dough!

My mom used to make me playdough when I was a kid! She would put vanilla extract or some other extract in it to make it smell pretty.

I love playdough! Loved it as a child and still love it today — would love to make this with my young cousins for a fam get together. Haha they’d probably smash this stuff in each other’s hair but hey– that’s youth for ya!

Oh my gosh, this looks like a blast! My kids always leave the playdough out and it gets hard, so this is a great way to give them something to make and then play with too!
